If you have learned anything about me, Adam Roseman, from reading my posts, then you know I am a fool for Native American culture. On display at the Burke is Weaving Heritage: Textiles from the Burke Collection.

The exhibit is billed as the first large scale display of the Burke’s collection of international ethnic textiles. At this marvelous show you will cast your eyes upon more than 130 exquisitely designed and “culturally significant” textile masterpieces. Spanning the globe from China, Japan, Indonesia and Southeast Asia, there are amazing examples of ethnic weaving art from right here in our own backyard. The Navajo, Hopi, and Pacific Northwestern tribes are represented as well as some magnificent work from Mexico and South America. Head over to UW and enjoy a very special show of ethnic textile art. Tell them Adam Roseman sent you.

I love getting my students to think in an entirely new way. That is, after all, what teaching is all about. One way that I do this is by introducing the kids to experiences and thought-processes that they might not otherwise encounter. I don’t fool myself that I’m changing the world. But, perhaps, I’m changing the way that a few students see the world and their role in it. Perhaps.

During my year-long high school course on American ethnic history, I teach about Native American traditional medicine. Most of these students have only been exposed to Western medical practices. They aren’t familiar with the spiritual, cosmological, and ecological perspectives that shape Native-American healing. I love introducing them to these topics and helping them to learn about alternative approaches to medicine and to gain an appreciation for the traditional healing practices of Native American culture.

This week we are exploring Native American herbal medicines and learning about their contributions to the medical practices of today. More than 200 Native American botanical medicines have been listed at one time in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia!

As I’ve certainly mentioned before, I love Mexican cooking. Particularly having grown up in Los Angeles, where there is such a strong Hispanic influence, I find Mexican cooking to offer fresh, delicious choices.

Here are a few quick tips when engaging in Mexican cooking. Make sure to offer both meat and vegetable dishes at each meal. This creates a nice variety, and makes for a healthier and more enjoyable eating experience. Always use the freshest ingredients possible and be sure to have all of your materials in front of you as you begin cooking. This means that all of your vegetables should be washed and cut, your meats should be pre-cut and marinated and your sauces should be ready to go.

All of this will allow you to create a smooth cooking experience and to enjoy the experience at hand (and the product, of course!).

As part of the history curriculum that I teach, I’ve recently added a feature that I find quite exciting. I teach ethnic American history at the high school level, and I’ve found one great way to get to the kids is through film. In this super-technology based society, I find that I get through to my students more if I talk their language.

And what better language to speak than the language of film! So, I’ve done a lot of research and I’ve found some great African-American films that help to show the scope of African-American culture and to illustrate its many important contributions to American cinematic history. So far I’ve shown one film and a number of short clips and the students seem to really respond to this type of visual input. I’m hoping it will continue to go this smoothly throughout the year!

Little League Baseball, Incorporated – more commonly termed in its general format as Little League – is a non-profit organization in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, which organizes baseball and softball teams for children around the world. Little League offers kids the opportunity to improve their physical capacity, overall physical health and mental willpower, providing children with a great way of exercising. It is more than just a sport though; it acts as a means to develop an appreciation for both the contribution of the individual and the importance of teamwork, as well as enhancing confidence and sense of self – key values for children to develop as they grow up.

I think the best thing about being a teacher is probably the first day of school. There is such a feeling of anticipation and excitement. Everything is open. The kids have the entire year ahead of them and no one has any pre-conceived ideas about them, their abilities or their intentions.

Each year, I get excited as the beginning of the year approaches. I’m particularly excited this year because we are introducing a multi-disciplinary plan of action between the English department and the history department. I’ve spent the summer coordinating with one of the English teachers, and we plan to work our way through American history together. While I’m teaching about the history of ethnic minorities in the U.S. to the 10th grade, she’ll be reading books written by African-American, Hispanic and Native-American writers. It should make for a fantastic curriculum and an exciting year!

Many kids can benefit from joining a youth baseball league. Engaging in such activities is so much more than just about getting to the top of your game from a physical point of view. You’re going to learn all about self-discipline and you’ll start to develop your self-confidence and independence, while simultaneously seeing how much better shape your body is in too.

So really, youth baseball is an all-over mind-body-spirit workout. Also, no matter how badly you feel your body (and mind) are in before you begin this, this is an activity that is open to everyone. Beginners, intermediate and those advanced can all benefit from this activity.

Now in my early 30s, I look back at my life so far and I’m impressed with how much I’ve accomplished. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and I attended schools all the way through college in the Los Angeles area. I was privileged to graduate from Brentwood High School and to attend U.C.L.A. I graduated from U.C.L.A. with College Honors with a B.A. degree in history.

From there, my journey has taken me to the Pacific Northwest where I feel completely at home. After graduating from U.C.L.A. and taking a few months to explore Europe with a friend, I settled in Seattle and began my professional life. I’ve always loved history, particularly studying the contributions of ethnic minorities to American culture, and I was excited to start my career as a history teacher. I’ve been teaching at the same high school for ten years now. While teaching is an incredibly challenging undertaking, it’s also quite rewarding. Most of the time, I’m enjoying my accomplishments and I look back over the last decade with pride.
